After the Pinellas County Commission voted 4-3 to remove fluoride last month as a matter of a public health issue, and after the health officials tried to get them to vote for a portable-fluoride-van,
NOW THE COMMISSIONERS ARE HAVING TO VOTE ON THE ISSUE AGAIN, ON JAN. 24, BECAUSE THE PRO-FLUORIDE SUBMITTED ENOUGH PETITIONS, AS A PUBLIC HEALTH DEMAND, FOR A REVOTE!!

More on FDA's NDI Being Redirected

From Natural Solutions Foundation in Panama -- January 5, 2012 - SILVER SPRING, Md.—

"Senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) urged FDA to withdraw its New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) Draft Guidance in a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, MD - Senators Hatch and Harkin, the principal authors of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act  of 1994 (DSHEA), asked Dr. Hamburg to issue a new draft that, 'will provide needed clarification on what constitutes an NDI, but does not undermine the balance Congress struck in DSHEA to provide consumers with access to safe, affordable dietary supplement products.'

"The Senators said the draft guidance undermines DSHEA in a number of ways. For example, they wrote FDA's belief that notifications are required for each supplement containing an NDI is contrary to the language of DSHEA, which they said requires one notification per new ingredient. 'The FDA's misinterpretation of this provision is far from harmless,' they wrote. 'Indeed, this burdensome requirement would impose substantial, additional costs on manufacturers without providing additional safety benefits and would undermine the access to safe, affordable dietary supplements that DSHEA was designed to ensure.'"

City Council to Pay for Fluoride-Free Water Vending Machine??

What?  First a portable-fluoride-van is proposed in Florida, by the "health" officials, where the city council voted out fluoride in their drinking water.  Now, there's a city council in California who votes next week on the same issue, and their water plant is proposing to keep fluoride in the water, but put up a self-serving kiosk outside the water treatment plant where people can drive-up to get their own fluoride-free water.

Have to agree with those who advocate that the city-state-national governments stay out of it, provide pure/multiple-filtered water for everybody, and let the consumer seek out their own fluoridated toothpaste, mouthwash, food, beverages, and dental treatments.  The argument that "it's for the poor" can also be resolved by passing out the donated, fluoridated toothpaste/mouthwash/food/beverages/and dental treatments.  What do you think?

FDA's NDI - Got Stopped (temporarily)

Looks like there were enough of us pushing back the FDA's attack on DSHEA to get some action.  This article says that an organization by the name of Alliance for Natural Health accomplished the following>>> "...ANH-USA, together with a number of supplement trade organizations, went to Capitol Hill to plead our case about the FDA’s profoundly flawed NDI (new supplement) draft guidance in the offices of two powerful senators and longtime friends of natural health, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT). Our visit was preceded by all the letters you have been sending to Congress, which have immeasurably increased the visibility of this issue..."

The January 3, 2012 article states that the two senators contacted FDA and made them stop what they were doing, and then proposed that they work with the FDA to write a new draft that clarifies the new ingredient guidelines to be more "consistent with DSHEA."

Hummmmmmmmm.... just ran across this article about the FDA going through all the emails and comments made to them in regards to the NDI's, but it doesn't say anything about the two senators visiting them and making a proposal....read it here, and then let us know what you've found regarding this topic>>>

Portable Fluoride Van? + Fluoride & High Crimes

Yeah, you read that right!  Pinellas County, Florida just voted out fluoride, but now the health officials are proposing the county commissioners vote on having a portable-fluoride-van to drive around town to give fluoride and dental services to children.  If they vote to do it, the van would cost county taxpayers $532,339 when it "only" cost the county $205,000 a year to pay for the fluoride chemicals to put into the tap water!

But scroll down to the bottom of that article and read the blog that only makes common sense:  the author, Winston Kao (chemist and researcher for organic foods), blogs that the argument of fluoride as a topical application to harden teeth is true, but "...of course, assumes that topical application is not immediately absorbed by your gums and the tissues in your mouth, which of course it does.."  Read the rest here>> http://www.gobeyondorganic.com/Weekly-News-Tips/stealthy-fluoridation-on-wheels.html

What do you think?  Should Pinellas County Commissioners vote to have a fluoride-van now that they've saved their residents, and budget, from fluoride chemicals in their water?  One of the county commissioners is fighting the portable-fluoride-van if you'd like to support him.

Then I ran across this 2005 study about "Water Fluoridation and Crime in America," indicating that high crime areas also have a fluoridated water supply. It gives details supporting the original hypothesis that drinking fluoride causes mental and behavior problems that cause crime, which backs up the 1999 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Studies that says fluoridated water will increase the blood lead level in children that "...will cause learning disabilities, seizures, ADHD, and higher rates of behavior problems with violent crime and substance abuse..." Read the study here>> http://www.fluorideresearch.org/381/files/38111-22.pdf

What about you?  Any examples ever happen to you, or others you know, that caused concern about the tap water?

Jan. 1, 2012>>FDA vs. DSHEA

Ran across this 5-paged article that explains in more detail how FDA's new "guidelines" will affect a manufacture's "safety tests" on the ingredients in their supplements -
  • Has to be a year-long study
  • Has to be tested on animals
  • The animals have to consume, every day, the human equivalent of 240,000 mg of the ingredient (where humans would be taking 2,400 mg per day)
  • During another part of that year-long study, part of it must include a 90 day to 1,000 days test, which must have 2 different animals, one a non-rodent, i.e., young beagle dog
  • During the short-term testing, the animals have to consume, every day, the human equivalent of 2.4 million mg of the ingredient for a "safety margin study" -- since "...virtually no species can tolerate this high dose, so by default, FDA guidelines will make it impossible for certain...supplements to be sold..."
  • "...(these) safety thresholds are in excess of those required by pharmaceutical drugs despite studies showing supplements are far safer than drugs..."
  •  "...turns what was meant to be a simple notification system for new dietary ingredients into a preapproval scheme that Congress did not intend to create"
  • "...Congress recognized that dietary supplements are natural ingredients and therefore inherently safer than drugs and chemical food ingredients. It did not intend that the FDA would have the power to approve or reject dietary supplements
  • Includes a suggested form letter to use in contacting your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator, discouraging emails that can be ignored or even deleted

Remember this headline from October 11, 2011?

(1994 DSHEA)"FDA is willfully and grossly misinterpreting.."

The comment period ends December 2, so act quickly and feel free to borrow from our submission. And be sure to keep an eye out for further developments in this critical campaign.  The Citizens for Health Team

Here's a blog report from "Sandy's Insights" that I found today that gives further developments:
"Daniel Fabricant, FDA Director for Division of Dietary Supplement Programs, asked this question at last week's comment period webinar..., 'What kind of legacy (it) wants to have—one with unsafe products on the market with the potential to harm consumers, or one that is compliant with the law?'...
"From what Fabricant said during the webinar (check out the full press coverage here), it seems FDA isn't going to budge on a lot of the points industry took issue with in comments filed. Fabricant referred to, and read directly from, DSHEA more than once. He said the plain reading of the statue shows NDINs are for supplements, not ingredients...

"As I noted in my last blog, from here, industry is stuck waiting to see what FDA's next move it (sic), unless a company wants to try to challenge the Draft Guidance in court. But issues of standing could be problem. Now, we twiddle our thumbs and hope FDA can be persuaded by comments submitted by industry. Time will tell."

In spite of the FDA's prior argument, that of being concerned about ingredients, now the FDA director is changing it to being in reference to supplements instead of ingredients.  What ideas do you have that we all need to be doing to protect DSHEA?
