Fluoride Action Network (FAN) hires Dr. William Hirzy to join their FAN staff --

FAN has some very exciting news about our expanding influence in Washington, D.C., but first there was a fluoride-free victory this week that we would like to share.

On August 19, city councilors in Woodland, Washington, voted 6-1 to stop adding fluoride to the public water supply for the town’s approximately 6,000 residents. All 20 residents who attended the council meeting spoke in opposition to fluoridation. Council members said they spent a “significant” time studying both sides of the debate and made their decision to protect personal freedom and patient rights. According to Councilman Benjamin Fredricks, “Even if fluoridation prevents tooth decay, the city shouldn't make a medical decision for citizens without their consent."

FAN strengthens its position in DC

With the fluoride-free movement achieving so many successes around North America and the rest of the English-speaking fluoridating world, FAN has chosen this moment to strengthen its position in Washington, DC.

We have done this by hiring Dr. William Hirzy, who has just retired from his teaching position at American University. He brings to the FAN team a unique combination of experience and scientific knowledge on the fluoridation issue. A chemist by profession, he has worked in academia, industry and at the US Environmental Protection Agency. He gives a short summary of this experience below.

Many of FAN’s supporters will be familiar with Dr. Hirzy’s videotaped testimony on the dangers of fluoridation during a US Senate hearing held in 2000. They will also have heard of his (and Dr. Bob Carton’s) leadership efforts in the Union (which represented the professional employees at the EPA headquarters) to get the EPA to uphold scientific integrity and abandon its unscientific support for the fluoridation program. We are thrilled to have Bill join our team.

Meanwhile, several weeks ago I joined Bill in lobbying members of the U.S. House and Senate in opposition to Dow AgroSciences’ effort to overturn the EPA's proposal to phase out its food fumigant sulfuryl fluoride. If Dow achieves this it will reverse one of FAN’s major victories, which was 8 years in the making. 


Background. For those who know little about me, I am a chemist who worked in industry for 19 years and the U.S. EPA for 27 years as a senior risk assessment scientist. I recently retired from a full time chemistry and environmental science teaching position at American University that I held for 5 years, after having taught chemistry part time for over 25 years.

While at EPA I worked with Bob Carton, a fellow union president, on the issue of fluoride toxicity as part of our union’s fight for scientific integrity in EPA’s missions. Bob and I spoke before many governmental and citizens groups about EPA’s lack of professional ethics and integrity regarding drinking water standards for fluoride.

Recent Published Research. Bob and I, along with three of my A.U. students recently published a paper in the peer reviewed journal Environmental Science and Policy, Vol. 29 pp 81-86 (May 2013), comparing use of pharmaceutical grade sodium fluoride (NaF) and the phosphate waste product hydrofluorosilicic acid (HFSA) as fluoridating agents. We showed that HFSA causes between 100 and 1200 times more lung and bladder cancer because of HFSA’s arsenic contamination. Our calculations used only EPA’s own risk numbers for arsenic published in the Agency’s Drinking Water Regulations for Arsenic. Our paper also cited peer reviewed work published by Roger Masters, Mike Coplan and others showing that use of HFSA and its sodium salt is linked to increases in blood-lead levels and violent crime.

Ketogenic Diet May Be Key to Cancer Recovery

All-Natural Cancer Prevention Strategies

My recommendation to you is to not wait for the system to change, but to take matters into your own hands—now. It’s important to realize that cancer screening does NOT in any way equate to cancer prevention, and that while early detection is important, a number of popular screening methods have been shown to cause more harm than good—mammography in particular.
In the largest review of research into lifestyle and breast cancer, the American Institute of Cancer Research estimated that about 40 percent of US breast cancer cases could be prevented if people made wiser lifestyle choices.12, 13 I believe these estimates are far too low, and it is more likely that 75 percent to 90 percent of breast cancers could be avoided by strictly applying the recommendations below.
  1. Improve your insulin receptor sensitivity. The best way to do this is by avoiding sugar and grains and making sure you are exercising, especially with Peak Fitness.
  2. Address your food preparation. Eat at least one-third of your food raw. Avoid frying or charbroiling; boil, poach or steam your foods instead. Consider adding cancer-fighting whole foods, herbs, spices and supplements to your diet, such as broccoli, curcumin and resveratrol.   3. Avoid carbohydrates and sugar. Reduce or eliminate processed foods, sugar/fructose and grain-based foods from your diet. This applies to whole unprocessed organic grains as well, as they tend to rapidly break down and drive up your insulin level. The evidence is quite clear that if you want to avoid cancer, or you currently have cancer, you absolutely MUST avoid all forms of sugar, especially fructose, which feeds cancer cells and promotes their growth.
  4. Reduce protein and increase fat. Consider reducing your protein levels to one gram per kilogram of lean body weight. It would be unusual for most adults to need more than 100 grams of protein and most likely close to half of that amount. Replace excess protein with high quality fats, such as organic eggs from pastured hens, high quality meats, avocados, and coconut oil.
  5. Drink a half to whole quart of organic green vegetable juice daily. Please review my juicing instructions for more detailed information.
  6. Avoid GMOs. Avoid genetically engineered foods as they are typically treated with herbicides such as Roundup (glyphosate), which are likely to be carcinogenic. A French research team that has extensively studied Roundup concluded it’s toxic to human cells, and likely carcinogenic to humans. Choose fresh, organic, preferably locally growth foods.
  7. Avoid unfermented soy products. Unfermented soy is high in plant estrogens, or phytoestrogens, also known as isoflavones. In some studies, soy appears to work in concert with human estrogen to increase breast cell proliferation, which increases the chances for mutations and cancerous cells. [Sidebar Note: all soy in the USA is GMO and unfermented - the healthy soy in Japanese food is non-GMO and is fermented]
  8. Normalize your omega-3 to omega-6 fats ratio. Normalize your ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats by taking a high-quality krill oil and reducing your intake of processed vegetable oils. [Sidebar Note:  Dr. Mercola promotes krill oil as a healthy animal source of Omega-3, and others promote organic hemp oil from Canada as a healthy plant source of Omega-3 that also includes a healthy balance of Omega-6 and Omega-9]
  9. Optimize your gut flora. Optimizing your gut flora will reduce inflammation and strengthen your immune response. Researchers have found a microbe-dependent mechanism through which some cancers mount an inflammatory response that fuels their development and growth. They suggest that inhibiting inflammatory cytokines might slow cancer progression and improve the response to chemotherapy.
  10. Adding naturally fermented food to your daily diet is an easy way to prevent cancer or speed recovery. You can always add a high quality probiotic supplement as well, but naturally fermented foods are the best.
  11. Exercise regularly. Exercise lowers insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells. In a three-month study, exercise was found to alter immune cells into a more potent disease-fighting form in cancer survivors who had just completed chemotherapy.
  12. Researchers and cancer organizations increasingly recommend making regular exercise a priority in order to reduce your risk of cancer, and help improve cancer outcomes. Research has also found evidence suggesting exercise can help trigger apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells. Ideally, your exercise program should include balance, strength, flexibility, high intensity interval training (HIIT). For help getting started, refer to my Peak Fitness Program.
  13. Optimize your vitamin D level. There is scientific evidence you can decrease your risk of cancer by more than half simply by optimizing your vitamin D levels with appropriate sun exposure. Your serum level should hold steady at 50-70 ng/ml, but if you are being treated for cancer, it should be closer to 80-90 ng/ml for optimal benefit.
  14. If you take oral vitamin D and have cancer, it would be very prudent to monitor your vitamin D blood levels regularly, as well as supplementing your vitamin K2, as K2 deficiency is actually what produces the symptoms of vitamin D toxicity.   15. Get plenty of natural vitamin A. There is evidence that vitamin A also plays a role in helping prevent breast cancer.14 It's best to obtain it from vitamin A-rich foods, rather than a supplement. Your best sources are organic egg yolks,15 raw butter, raw whole milk, and beef or chicken liver.
  16. Consider curcumin. This is the active ingredient in turmeric and in high concentrations can be very useful adjunct in the treatment of breast cancer. It shows immense therapeutic potential in preventing breast cancer metastasis.16 It's important to know that curcumin is generally not absorbed that well, so I've provided several absorption tips here.
  17. Optimize your sleep. Make sure you are getting enough restorative sleep. Poor sleep can interfere with your melatonin production, which is associated with an increased risk of insulin resistance and weight gain, both of which contribute to cancer’s virility.
  18. Limit your exposure to toxins. Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, herbicides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and toxic cosmetics. Avoid BPA, phthalates and other xenoestrogens. These are estrogen-like compounds that have been linked to increased breast cancer risk.
  19. Limit your exposure to radiation. Limit your exposure and protect yourself from radiation produced by cell phones, towers, base stations, and Wi-Fi stations, as well as minimizing your exposure from radiation-based medical scans, including dental x-rays, CT scans, and mammograms.
  20. Avoid synthetic hormone replacement therapy. Breast cancer is an estrogen-related cancer, and according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer rates for women dropped in tandem with decreased use of hormone replacement therapy. (There are similar risks for younger women who use oral contraceptives. Birth control pills, which are also comprised of synthetic hormones, have been linked to cervical and breast cancers.)
  21. Make sure you're not iodine deficient, as there's compelling evidence linking iodine deficiency with breast cancer. Dr. David Brownstein,17 author of the book Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It, is a proponent of iodine for breast cancer. It actually has potent anticancer properties and has been shown to cause cell death in breast and thyroid cancer cells.
  22. For more information, I recommend reading Dr. Brownstein's book. I have been researching iodine for some time ever since I interviewed Dr. Brownstein as I do believe that the bulk of what he states is spot on. However, I am not convinced that his dosage recommendations are correct. I believe they are too high.
  23. Stress Management. Stress from all causes is a major contributor to disease. Even the CDC states that 85 percent of disease is driven by emotional factors. It is likely that stress and unresolved emotional issues may be more important than the physical ones, so make sure this is addressed. My favorite tool for resolving emotional challenges is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).

What to Do if You Already Have Cancer

Without a doubt the most powerful essential strategy I know of to treat cancer is to starve the cells by depriving them of their food source. Unlike your body cells, which can burn carbs or fat for fuel, cancer cells have lost that metabolic flexibility. Dr. Otto Warburg was actually given a Nobel Prize over 75 years ago for figuring this out but virtually no oncologist actually uses this information.
You can review my recent interview with Dr. D’Agostino below for more details but integrating a ketogenic diet with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which is deadly to cancer cells by starving them of their fuel source, would be the strategy I would recommend to my family if they were diagnosed with cancer.

Report Finds “Probably Carcinogenic” Chemicals in All Municipal Water Samples Tested

  • Environmental Working Group (EWG) just released a report finding “probable human carcinogens” in every single municipal water sample tested, from 43 different states across the United States
  • Chlorine and other water treatment chemicals react with ordinary organic particles in the water to create hundreds of extremely toxic byproducts (disinfection byproducts, or DBPs), which aren’t regulated at all

Supplements have a stellar track record of safety and quality, thanks to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and consistently conscientious self-regulation by supplement producers. And earlier this week we alerted you to a resource that empowers the natural health and wellness community to help maintain that unassailable reputation, built over decades -

Tell your Senators "My Supplements Are Safe" - Vote "NO" on S. 1425!

Well, Dick "Doubter" Durbin doesn't trust you to know what's good for you, nor does he think the regulatory framework responsible for supplements' safety over decades is good enough, despite the facts. That's why he's taking his third crack at passing the unnecessary - and dangerous - S. 1425.

Citizens for Health understands and shares the concern that makers of quick weight-loss pills, sexual enhancment drugs, or the plethora of “energy drinks” that have exploded on the market in the last decade are exploiting our system of consumer safety regulations. However, the answer is not superfluous legislation or placing a greater financial burden on dietary supplement companies whose products have a long-standing, demonstrated track record of safety.

Tell Senators "Greater Enforcement, Not Costly Legislation" - Vote "NO" on S. 1425!

Put simply: At best, S. 1425 is a bad bill, albeit with good intentions. At worst, it exploits recent attacks on supplement safety and extrapolates the negative examples above to the entire category of supplements, as a means of justifying another crack at imposing unnecessary regulations on the dietary supplement industry.
